Siding Repair & Storm Damage: what to know
Repair or replace?
If the damage is limited to a few courses and matching panels can still be sourced, unzipping the affected courses and replacing them is straightforward. The obstacle is almost never the labor: it is the match. Vinyl fades over a decade of Kentucky sun, and profiles get discontinued, so a technically correct repair can end up visibly different from ten feet away. One common workaround is pulling panels from a rear or less visible elevation to patch the front, then using new material where nobody looks.
Storm damage specifically
Wind rarely tears through the middle of a panel. It gets under a butt edge, breaks the lock, and peels the course along its length, which is why wind damage shows up as a long horizontal strip of missing siding. Hail does the opposite: small circular chips with hairline cracks radiating out, easy to miss because vinyl cracks rather than dents. Debris punctures are obvious but often accompanied by less obvious damage across the same elevation.
The urgent part is the sheathing
Siding is a rain screen. With a panel gone, only house wrap and sheathing stand between the weather and the framing, and house wrap is not designed to be blasted by wind-driven rain for days. Wet OSB swells, loses fastener grip and can delaminate; moisture reaching the stud cavity can start mold quickly in Ohio Valley humidity. Getting the opening covered comes before getting it matched.
Before you sign anything after a storm
Out-of-area crews canvass Kentucky neighborhoods within days of severe weather. Ask for a Kentucky address, a certificate of general liability and workers compensation insurance, and references from your own county. Read anything that assigns your insurance claim rights to a contractor, and never sign it on the doorstep.
