What a real siding replacement includes
Re-siding a house is not a swap of cladding. On most older Kentucky homes the interesting part of the job is what sits behind the old panels: sheathing that may have taken water for years, house wrap that is torn or missing entirely, and window and door openings that were never flashed to direct water back out of the wall. A quote that assumes none of that will be found is a quote that will change once the job starts. Ask any contractor what happens at tear-off and who inspects the sheathing before new material goes up.
Choosing a material
- Vinyl, the volume choice on cost. Performs well when hung correctly: loose on the nail hem so it can move through Kentucky's temperature swings, nails centered in the slot, never driven tight.
- Insulated vinyl, a foam backer adds rigidity, dent resistance and some thermal benefit, and it makes the wall look flatter.
- Fiber cement, better impact resistance against hail and debris, takes paint, and gives a heavier shadow line. Costs more in both material and labor because of weight.
- Steel, less common on Kentucky residential work but holds up well to hail; dents rather than cracks.
Expansion, and why it matters here
A vinyl wall moves measurably between a January morning and a July afternoon. Panels are designed to float on their fasteners to absorb that. Nailed tight, or nailed off-center, or driven at an angle, they cannot, and the stress concentrates at the fastener until the lock lets go in a windstorm. A large share of the "wind blew my siding off" calls across the state trace back to installation rather than to the wind.
What to compare between quotes
Tear-off and disposal, the water-resistive barrier, flashing at every opening, corner posts and J-channel, trim, and the warranty terms on material and labor separately. Prices vary; scopes vary more.
