Overflow is not always a clog
The first assumption is always leaves. Often it is pitch. Hangers pull loose over time, particularly on fascia that has already begun to soften, and a run that sags in the middle will hold standing water and overflow there every storm regardless of how clean it is. Undersized downspouts, a roof valley dumping into a short section, and drip edge that lets water run behind the gutter are the other usual causes that cleaning will never fix.
Why this is worth taking seriously
A blocked or badly pitched gutter concentrates a roof's worth of water within inches of the wall. Saturated soil against a foundation swells and pushes laterally on block or poured walls and raises hydrostatic pressure at the footing. Over seasons that produces stair-step cracking in block, bowed basement walls, wet crawl spaces and settlement. Kentucky freeze-thaw cycles accelerate all of it.
Guards: useful, not magic
Gutter guards cut cleaning frequency substantially, which matters a lot under the maples and sycamores common across the Ohio Valley. They do not eliminate maintenance, fine debris, shingle grit and seed pods still accumulate on and under most guard types. And a guard fitted over a sagging run or soft fascia hides the real problem rather than solving it. Ask whether the existing gutters and fascia are sound enough to carry guards before adding them.
What a service visit covers
Typically: clearing the run and the outlets, flushing to confirm flow, checking pitch and hanger spacing, and verifying that downspouts discharge away from the house. Structural work, rotted fascia, a run that needs replacing, a buried drain extension, normally comes back as a separate quote.
