What to do right now
- Stay clear of downed power lines and any siding still hanging loose, do not climb a ladder in wind or rain.
- From the ground, photograph every damaged elevation of the house in Paducah before anything is touched or cleaned up.
- Cover exposed sheathing and any opening with a tarp or heavy plastic if you can do it safely from ground level.
- Move furniture and stored items away from the inside of the affected wall and check for water tracking down the interior.
- Call your insurer to open a claim and ask what their notice deadline is, do not rely on a number you read online.
- Request an emergency assessment so a licensed local contractor can dry-in the wall before the next rain band.
Why exposed sheathing is the real emergency
Siding is a rain screen, not a structural layer. When a panel is torn off, the wall is left with only house wrap and sheathing between the weather and the framing. House wrap is designed to shed water that runs down it, not to be blasted by wind-driven rain for days. OSB sheathing that stays wet swells at the edges, loses fastener grip and starts to delaminate. Once moisture reaches the stud cavity, insulation packs down and mold can start within a couple of days in Kentucky humidity.
What storm damage to siding actually looks like
Not all of it is obvious from the curb. Look for panels that have unzipped from the locking course and are rattling, cracks radiating from a nail head, chalky or scuffed areas where debris skidded across the wall, and gaps at corner posts and J-channel around windows. On fiber cement, look for cracked butt joints and chipped edges. On steel and aluminum, look for dents and creased panels. Check the elevation that faced the storm first, then walk the whole house, hail and debris often hit two sides.
Be careful who knocks on your door
After a severe storm, out-of-area crews canvass Kentucky neighborhoods within days. Some are legitimate. Many are not. Before signing anything, ask for a Kentucky address, a certificate of general liability insurance and workers compensation, and references from the same county. Never hand over your insurance settlement check or sign a document that assigns your claim rights to a contractor without reading it carefully. A contractor who will not leave you a written scope of work to compare with another bid is not one you want on your house.
Insurance timing
Most homeowner policies require prompt notice of a loss and reasonable steps to prevent further damage. Emergency tarping is usually covered as part of that duty, keep every receipt and every photo. Confirm the actual deadlines and coverage with your own insurer or agent; policy language varies and nothing here is a substitute for reading your policy.
