What to do right now
- Write down the date and rough time of the hail event in Winchester: your insurer will ask for it.

How to spot hail damage on vinyl siding
Vinyl does not dent the way metal does. It cracks. Look for hairline splits radiating out from a small impact point, usually a half-moon or circular chip where the surface has been knocked out. On aged vinyl the cracks are cleaner and more numerous, because ultraviolet exposure over ten or fifteen Kentucky summers makes the material brittle. Cold makes it worse, hail in early spring or late fall does more damage to vinyl than the same stones in July. Damage often reads as nothing more than a slightly different sheen from the ground and only becomes obvious from six feet away with light raking across the wall.
Check the soft metal first
Because vinyl hides hail so well, experienced inspectors start with the things that dent visibly: aluminum gutters and downspouts, window capping, soffit and fascia, roof vents, and the fins on the outdoor AC unit. If those are peppered, the walls almost certainly took hits too. Chalk marks or a bare hand run across a downspout will find dimples your eyes skip over.
Kentucky sits in an active hail corridor
Kentucky sees its heaviest severe weather in two windows, a primary spring season running roughly March through June, and a secondary fall season. The state also has a genuine tornado history, and the same supercells that produce tornadoes produce large hail and straight-line winds. Damage from one afternoon can affect a whole subdivision at once, which is exactly why storm-chasing sales crews appear so quickly afterward.
Do not let the claim window quietly close
Homeowner policies require prompt notice of a loss, and hail damage that goes unreported for a season is much harder to attribute to a specific storm. Do not take a deadline from a contractor or from a web page, call your own insurer or agent and ask what your policy requires. Get an independent written assessment first so you can compare it against the adjuster's scope rather than reacting to it.
